The 100 - Mile Club

This event is meant as an incentive to get people involved in the sport of running.  Its secondary purpose is to motivate people to get active and fit by making a commitment to other members of the group.

Rules and regs

  1. The objective is to accumulate 100 miles of running between the dates of November 6, 2009 and February 13, 2010.  (100 miles in 100 days).

  2. All distances run must be logged either in a running log, agenda book, calendar or other hard copy planner.  This is so that the organizers can verify all claims of mileage if a need should arise.

  3. The minimum distance that shall count toward an individual’s total is 1.0 mile run for a single outing.  Beyond this, you may record (for example) 2.5 miles in a single outing, but distances less than one mile for any single run shall not be counted.(Specifically, if you happen to jog four blocks on your way home, this is not considered to be a run.)

  4. Participants are expected to report their distances to the organizer on a regular (such as weekly) basis, and totals will be credited to that individual and posted on the Official 100 Mile Club website.

  5. In the event of a dispute over the validity of a mileage claim, the organizer reserves the right to ask an individual to demonstrate the ability to actually run the disputed distance.  (For instance, if you report a 10-mile run on a Saturday in January, when all other runs have been two miles or less, the organizer can ask you repeat that 10-mile outing in his presence to validate your claim.)

  6. Since this is a running program, only running will be counted toward your total.  This can be done on a treadmill, track, or on the road, provided you cover distances that can be accurately measured for distance. Four exceptions:
    • Since swimming is of a recognized cardio-vascular activity (and fun), swimming distances will be counted, provided they are accurately measured laps or distance (not estimated from time spent).  The "exchange rate" will be 1.0 mile swimming = 4.0 miles running.  Minimum distance 0.25 mi = 16 lengths.

    • Cycling is permitted as long as it is brisk (suggested heart rate 120 to 150 beats per minute.  Minimum distance must be 6.0 miles.  Exchange rate 3.0 miles cycled = 1.0 mile run.

    • Since cross-country skiing is of a similar intensity to running, and since members of our staff have organized an active ski club, miles skied will be counted, provided they are accurately measured miles (not estimated from time spent). The “exchange rate” will be 1.0 mile skiing = 1.0 mile running.

    • Walking will be permitted only for the 40+ age group (aka “the masters”), and must consist of a minimum of 2.0 miles at a time.  Intervals of jogging are strongly encouraged.

  7. Who may join?
    • Any current student attending the SRSS
    • Any staff member of the SRSS including substitute teachers
    • Any former student who has previously achieved membership in the SRSS100 Running Club

To have your login access enabled, please see Mr. Pries for a password to gain access to this website. Then, start running and recording those distances. Note: You do not officially become a full member until your 100 miles is complete.

If you do not have an appropriate “log book” to keep track of your distance, speak to Mr. Propp about using one of his design.

Our goal is to get enough people involved that our total mileage will be equivalent to a jog around the world, 24900 miles.

We are still working on ideas for prizes, etc. for members, but in the meantime, rest assured that the biggest prize of all will be the remarkable improvement in your own wellness when you realize all the benefits that come from being in the best physical condition of your life. So put down that game controller, shut off the TV, put that second dessert back n the fridge. Lace up those running shoes, earn your place as a member of the 100 Mile Club.
